The Executive Chair

executivechaircategory

The one question you always want to ask a successful person in a senior leadership role is “How did you get there?” In developing your own career, you learn more from hearing what worked – and didn’t work – from senior leaders and hearing their wisdom than from any other source.

We are embarking on a series of interviews with leaders who exemplify success for us. In their words are insights that can give you direction for moving your own career forward.

The Executive Chair

Featured This Week: Dan Merzetti - President of DSM Telecom

Dan M 114

“Working on your business and not in your business is something developing professionals and specifically entrepreneurs need to do more of. By this I mean the day to day workings of the business, the operations, the processes and all that it takes to keep the lights on takes a lot of time and energy. All of it is important but if you aren’t thinking about where you are going, why you are going there and developing plans to get you there, the lights won’t be on very long.”

-Dan Merzetti

Dan Merzetti isn't your typical start up entrepreneur. Like many, he has a service and product he believes the market needs and will respond to but his competition just happens to be two of the region's largest telecommunication giants. With two Goliaths to consider, his brand of technology and services are picking up speed and along the way, his leadership capabilities are being tested.

Dan Merzetti is a native of Saint John, New Brunswick. Many of his classmates and teachers at St. Malachy's High School attended St FX, so Dan decided to pursue a degree in business there which ultimately led him to settle in Halifax.

His background in the telecom industry began with Sprint Canada as District Manager of the Atlantic Region and then as an independent dealer for Sprint wireline services which later became Rogers, adding wireless to DSM's portfolio. By this time DSM had added IP PBX (business telephone systems) and SIP trunking (a new way to deliver business dial tone) to its product offering as new trends emerged toward converged IP (internet Protocol) services. Seeing an opportunity, he took DSM into the business phone market in 2010 by offering clients Digital Phone "cloud" based services, allowing them to access DSM Tel local dial tone through traditional desk phones, laptops, smartphones or tablets. Packaging these expanded services and offering additional features and flexibility to clients at 30-40% below what they would be paying through traditional carriers was something DSM believed the market would respond to. DSM was the recipient of a Small Business of the Year Award in 2011 and continued to expand its operations and services across Atlantic Canada.

We are sure you will enjoy Dan's perspectives and insights into his journey to the Executive Chair.

Continue to his interview.
