Desk Rage

What happens on the drive to work should stay on the drive to work.

A recent research study highlighted a growing problem in the workplace – desk rage! Really? The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health found through their survey in September 2008 that nearly half of employees have experienced yelling and verbal abuse on the job and 25% that their work environment had driven them to tears.

Longer commutes, heavier work loads, and dashed hopes of raises were mentioned as possible culprits for the growing problem.

My own advice is to step back and look at a different angle. Research also shows that 70% of workplace conflict is not a result of personality issues. The real cause of workplace stress is more than likely conative conflict rather than anything else.

What is conative conflict?

Each of us has four natural instinctive strengths in how we take action and work at our best. When we work with our strengths we perform better, interact with others better, and have less stress. These strengths stay with us over our lifetime and connect who we are with how we achieve.

Think about a white water rafter – in a situation of surging waters, jutting rocks, stomach-churning drops and turns, and pummeling waves and sprays the great rafters make it look effortless. They know how to go with the flow. This is what it is like to work with your strengths. When people try to fight the current they run into problems – fear and panic can set in.

Sadly, a Gallup Organization study revealed that only 18% of workers feel they work with their natural strengths. When you work against your strengths in your job, work closely with someone who has very different strengths and ways of going things, or have someone who is trying to make you work against your strengths you have the potential for stress and conflict. That is when the rage can start.

The Kolbe A© Assessment is the only validated measure of conative strengths available today. Finding out your instinctive strengths indicates how you can work at your best and perform and communicate best with the people you work with. Before quitting or throwing a stapler at someone, find out your instinctive strengths and assess the best fit for you.

Find how you work with the flow and perform at your best.
