Want more money, more time and less stress? Not getting it?
At times we all feel over-extended, over-committed, over-stressed and over-tired. We don’t get the success we feel we should have – or deserve. It seems like we never catch up. The problem is most of us live in the Gap.
Been there and done that. I attended Strategic Coach for thirteen years and one concept from Dan Sullivan stuck with me – The Gap.
The Gap is when we fall into that land between where we are and where we want to be – and then get trapped by the reality between knowing what to do and actually doing it. I see so many people stuck in the same place.
How do we get blocks and challenges out of our way? How do we capture our best opportunities? How do we best use our strengths? Where do you start?
Don’t jump first! We want the cure! We go to workshops, conferences, and retreats. We read books and listen to tapes. Always looking for the cure. We get ideas and we want to “jump-start” to make them the cure but are they the answer for us?
We never take time to diagnose before we come up with the cure!
Step back and take a small amount of time to reflect and diagnose. Gain the right perspective. THEN decide on a direction.
To the external eye you can appear a tremendous success while at the same time internally you are frustrated by what has not happened and what you have not accomplished – yet!
You are working in the Gap. We can get lost in the Gap based on the wrong perspective. The greatest challenge to our growth is always internal.
When we assess our success against the ideal picture we never measure up – its negative. The ideal is simply a mental image – it is not real and it is always changing. We look at where we are and see disappointments and failures leaving us frustrated.
We may be driven and achieve a great deal yet we are never happy with our success. We are locked in our vision of perfection and what we have not yet achieved. This feeling permeates our organization and can de-motivate our team.
Rather than evaluating our progress against what we haven’t done, we should assess where we are against what we have achieved. If we measure our success against our actual achievements – where we are now – we see progress and feel the positive energy from the steps we have taken. We gain satisfaction, optimism and confidence in what we have done and what we can do.
Diagnoses means you step back and get a full perspective on where you are right now – an honest view. Only then will you have the means to actually see where your problems lie – where is the Gap? Then you can move ahead and find solutions to resolve the Gap.
“You have to see the forest and the trees to succeed.” Peter Drucker
